Celebrating Women’s Month: Spotlight on Karla Zepeda of Citrine Beauty Creative Co.

March is Women’s History Month, and we’re thrilled to kick off our celebration by highlighting an inspiring woman-owned business right here in Rockford. Meet Karla Zepeda, the visionary behind Citrine Beauty Creative Co., a hub of beauty, wellness, and creativity located in the heart of downtown Cherry Valley.

Karla’s journey is one of passion, perseverance, and community. She first connected with Kellie back in 2021 when she was a solo massage therapist and became a client. Their instant connection blossomed into a lasting friendship, and over the years, they’ve cheered each other on as their businesses grew and evolved.

In 2022, Karla brought her dream to life by opening Citrine Beauty Creative Co. inside The Bricks retail location. Her vision was clear: to create more than just a salon or spa. She wanted to build a space where high-end beauty and wellness services meet a thriving community of creatives in the beauty industry.

“I wanted to create not just a space of high-end beauty and wellness for our clients but also a place where creatives in the beauty industry can connect and grow to reach their fullest potential,” Karla shares. “By cultivating a safe, motivating, inspiring, and high-energy environment, I believe we, as service providers, thrive. This applies to both coworkers and clients. Of course, we also ensure a relaxing atmosphere because, after all, we are a salon and spa!”

Citrine Beauty Creative Co. offers a wide range of services, including hair and nail care, while also housing five other independent businesses. Together, they provide everything from facials, waxing, and threading to lash extensions, makeup artistry, and even Botox and med spa services. It’s a one-stop destination for beauty and wellness, all under one roof.

What Running a Small Business Means to Karla

When asked what running a small business in the Rockford area means to her, Karla emphasizes the importance of community and resilience.

“Running a small business in the Cherry Valley/Rockford area means being part of a diverse and resilient local economy with a strong emphasis on community support,” she says. “I believe that women-owned businesses in Rockford make a significant and positive impact on the community both economically and socially. As more women entrepreneurs establish and grow their businesses, they contribute to job creation, innovation, and economic diversity while also inspiring the next generation of business leaders.”

What Inspires Karla

For Karla, inspiration comes from her family. They are her heart and the driving force behind her decision to become a business owner.

“What inspires me every day to keep pushing forward and not give up on this dream is my family,” she shares.

Advice for Aspiring Women Entrepreneurs

Karla’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and self-belief. Her advice to women looking to start their own businesses is both practical and empowering:

“The best advice I can give to women in business or those wanting to start their own is to find your inspiration—the thing that gives you strong motivation. You’ll need that motivation to stay in business and remain consistent. Once you find it, be confident in yourself and your business, and remember that you have something very valuable to offer to the world. You’ll do great!”
